<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> Fan-work is not allowed unless the source material is now in the public domain. Please consult the page public domain explained for details on the term.
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> Submissions must be in proper English.
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> Submissions must have appropriate content - no excessive violence, hateful, or adult content.
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> Submissions must follow the Daily Poem Format.
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> Submissions must not be more than fifty (50) lines in length, minus empty lines.
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> Submissions per person must not exceed four (4) at any given time.
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> If there are spelling and grammar errors in your submissions that prevent them being featured, the Daily Poem bosses will notify you in the comments section of this page and you will be given the opportunity to fix them.
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> The Daily Poem Bosses will not tell you what is wrong with your submission. The Daily Poem Bosses will not correct your submission for you. If you attempt to fix your submission and ask if it is fixed, we will gladly answer you.
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> Because of the aforementioned, the comment section of this page should not be used for chatter.

Failure to comply with these rules in two (2) sequential submissions or in four (4) totals submissions will result in an indefinite ban from the Daily Poem. Choosing to violate this ban will result in immediate entry removal as well as a warning from the Elftown Guards. To view a list of members who are not permitted to submit to the Daily Poem, please see Daily Poem Violators.

If for some reason you should be unable to edit this page properly, please contact one of the Daily Poem Bosses with a message containing your submission (in the correct format!) and, barring any issues, they will add it as soon as possible.

Entry Processing
The submissions are processed in the following manner:
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> Entries are sorted for possible feature candidates.
<img11*0:stuff/1285_wiki_Icon%2520Hoard_92L1cPqSgN2.1> Feature candidates are chosen at random to be featured on Main Street.

The Daily Poem Bosses reserve the right to not feature poems based upon the quality of work. Those poems which are removed from the list of candidates will be deleted without question. Therefore we suggest that you make sure that you submit your best work as well as make copies of what you do submit!
These rules are very strict. However, it helps cut down on the number of featured submissions, allowing for a faster, more efficient Daily Poem process.

For more details, please see the Daily Poem FAQ.

Please submit entries to the bottom of the page!

Obsession

A simple truth that was once told
A tale of fantasy that mortals behold
Of dragons, fairies, and so much more
That we hold deep inside our core
One great obsession that we adore
Now we see the world was bold
Our dreams of a place where we can hold
The creatures of our fantastic dreams
Do exist inside us it seems
Exploding through our creative seams
So we can embrace them with our hearts
And see them physically with our arts

End of the Line

I don’t know why I cling to you in spaces so lonesome
but push you away at the slightest movement;
because I feel that you will run anyway and I know it can’t last forever
because nothing does.
Because I always end up back where I started,
in a vicious cycle where I am always wrong and I deserve nothing
because nothingness I am
and I wonder if this is how all souls feel
or if I am the sole one
like this.
And that I push and let you drift away because
like all the others,
there was nothing to tie us together anyway.

The phoenix

As a fleck of blue heat,
a bird's schematic
that kindles in an oxygen gust

Does it grow up to do all the same things?

For him

In the beginning I felt like I’d found what I was looking for
you were my one.
I’ve grown since then and realised I wouldn’t follow you anywhere.
Not because I don’t love you but because I love myself.
I have a life here.
I have dreams and aspirations and they aren’t built around yours.
I wish you treated me the way I deserve.
But im tired of asking that of you.
If you wanted to, you would have by now.
I hate the way you make me feel.
I hate that i love you.
My mind is smart but my heart is wounded and hopelessly in love.
I wish I could leave.
But im scared to be alone, and im scared to let you be someone else’s.
I’m not ready to let you go, I still have hope that you’ll be my one.
But im not giving up everything I am, for you.
My life wasn’t built around marriage and love.
It was built around me and my happiness.
I come first this time.

In The Box

Pandora had a box
Unknowing of fear
Only aware that the gods were good

What greater gifts
Could be found
In this box?

Pandora had a box
Unknowing of violence and pain
Only knowing the gods to be kind

What greater gifts
Could be found
In This box?

Pandora Had a Box
That when opened
Fear and dread
Pain and Violence
All Woes were to be had

Pandora had a box
and at the bottom was hope
There was no need for it before

What Greater Gifts
Could be found?
Hope

Compass

Sometimes I think
The map of my mind
Is like a northern country
With jagged edges and piercing fjords

And sometimes,
I see a southern waste
Where the heat has dried
All life to sand
And the sun beats endlessly

But then,
In moments of silence,
When the world seems to stop
And the corners of my mind
Fill with quiet

Then, I realize,
The map of my mind
Is a country town
Where the church has a steeple
And Saturday is market day

Plans

Plans are candies to the fates

Plans crumble, with things
that are unavoidable.

Hopes for tomorrow
turn to sand falling into the sea

Now the Dreams that were.
Took the time to hope for.
You know will never be.

Misery

Then to rebuild
Just to have it all happen again.

Yet hope remains
that in the end some plans
will find their way to being reality.

to resistance

you age in circles of wood,
your heart revealing the frost you withstood.

the wildest stories of sun and wind
can all be read on your defiant skin -

on which your eternal, purifying tears
preserve the present and all past years.

you whisper and wander, though you stand still,
your raging desire, another's thrill.

you are a hunter, silent and cold.
your tale begins when all is told.

Tuesday haiku

You are like the sun;
enriching, burning, causing
DNA damage.

To my lovers

Like a loud noise
or an unexpected presence
yet another thought of you
causes a wildfire to spread
from kidney
to chest
to melancholy

to a shiver
into a smile -
and I miss you,
glad that what we had
is all we had.

Like a drug, nothing beats that first high;
like an unyielding cancer, it's still there.
Buried deep in my brain,
the urgent desire
for a sugarcoated memory.

The Hour Glass

Time eating to eternity
Ravaged by the animals
That pick and claw at it

The Fire that burns in us
Dropping slowly to the end

Slipping sand into the sea
Consumed by the tides and
Cast into the eternal abyss

Never failing to run out
Right as time is up.

Tiny dancing colts were the first
to trick this sad ire –
Cracking a smile in spite of my darkness.
And boy, weren’t you glad?
    You’d been trying all morning,
       Between coffee and kisses,
Showering joy in your own brand of love.
Take me far from the ocean,
From the last name to haunt it,
The gentle giant soul tortured in its throws –
Far from the blue on blue,
            white, cream and gold.
Try to distract me
with the green, green back country
   Full of outlaws and farmers,
     Ramshackle houses, tomatoes and groves.
I adore the fields of Brahman and Bradford
    (With their sweet, soppy faces),
Sheltered under palm or embracing the rain
like the blessing it is –
    No-sodium tears brimming the swales,
Sheeting my nerves ever so feebly.
Forget the deception that your fickle sea offers,
Dulling the mind with its rhythm and pulse,
     Calling you in
As if you’d be safe in those arms,
        So swishy and fluid –
Those arms won’t keep you from harm.
Out here you’ll find truth
in each bead that you’re sweating
It’s hot and you know it
    - Black, brown and green.
  Hard-lined yet soggy
     Broken, forgotten
       No depths to hide in,
       No pastels or sweet breeze
Lulling you into dangerous idyllic dreams.
Death flaunts its existence –
    Gems bloating the highway
Memorials to the facts and just how they go
       Not glitz-pocked or famous,
   But muck-stenched without tides –
Life is cruel and restless,
     It is pain and decline.
  You can fix broken wings,
     Bringing hope and all pride,
Just to see it ripped apart
as they’re shot from the sky.
And I think of all this as I sit and you drive –
You bring up things of bliss,
turn up songs, and just try,
         While I’m heartbeats away
         from a full-swelling cry…
Until I see those tiny colts
in the green, green to my right,
Rearing and prancing, all young and alive.

Eight hundred eyes and dragonflies
   Looking for a break
For the summer winds to give a damn
Not fling them to the rage.
The ocean’s been so punishing,
       Destruction in its wake
Jellies tangled in the tide thrown
            To sand
                 To sun
                     To fate.
All the pink life baked to pale,
                 Dissolved so slowly
                              Then erased.
There’s yet a draw in the fury’s storm
      You can’t help but appreciate,
As it calls eight hundred eyes
             To their demise,
             Feeding its hungry waves.
The scene’s surreal along the sea,
Where death seems a welcome treat –
           The sun is high,
                 Drenched in delight;
           Flowers bloom with vibrant life;
Still the waters thrash and growl and bite,
               While the air’s abuzz,
                     Boasting dragonflies –
                     Tiny, spritely dancers
                   Clouding the clear blue sky.

When all you want is that quiet place,
    Where the world d i s s o l v e s
                        and you can rest
       Always,
Always, when you’re not your best,
Time fleets on wings and shakes its fist.
       Sleep…….
               Sleep,
                    Little dreamer,
           You’re looking very weary.
That thund’ring head is a heavy blow,
A sickening sulk inside your skull
             Keeping your eyes a-seeping.
When work bellows its steady discord,
      You won’t want to wake,
      For you just know
         That sleep,
                  Sweet sleep…….
        Will d r i f t ……to a hazy past,
             Into an ancient realm
                    Your mind can’t grasp,
             Making you face your decline.
Still you tie up your guts,
          And pound the caffeine -
Throw a curse to the Fates for being so obscene
     Work through the night
                     A puppet on their thread
         And wait for the morning
                 So you can sleep
                    Sweet,
                          Sweet dreams.

You brought me back to life
       using coconuts and waffles -
Simple things not known to work.
And I’m not sure if I thanked you,
     But it was there…
                   Back in my mind.
The glee that comes from being caught
        On a hook
            Sopping
With syrup and creamy peanut butter,
       To be ignited,
             Excited…
It’s about as sweet a way to say, “I love you”
As any gem, card or flower.
My budding energy was burned
         On cat baths –
                 That sweet tort’ring of pets;
         On packing for tomorrow,
                  To where you can’t go.
             Anything to divert attention
                        …Waiting…
                    for you to get home.
That puddle I was
       For all of yesterday though,
       It couldn’t cohere
to much more than this cheesing
                 (despite all the fur)
So that’s just what I’ll give,
As I smile oh so silly,
          Swing from your neck
and mention all that I did
                      in your absence.

Kiss

To touch the lips of knowledge
From on high a rose of malignant beauty
An infection
Infestation
How dare we to question
Question the enormity
The purity
Indignant indifference
To absolute zero
Frozen petals a nice shade of blue
Burning green
Integrity, an equanimity endless
Stepped on light
Feathered clouds of weight
Light, temperate
Sun on soft wind on green stems
Red
Fire on petals
Lips on fiery knowledge

Madman in My Skin

Sitting on a park bench
Drowning in paper
I'm really not unhinged
Not yet, but check back in later

For there's a madman in my skin
Reaching in, peering out
Sounds of fury, wearing thin
Time to scream, to cry, to shout

Like icy stone, stoned ice
My flesh will shatter or spew
Or melt without the flood, splice
Split to carve something new

Someone or something hold my hand
It really hurts me not to bleed
Oh, the terrorist brand
Of a life lived without want or need

There's a madman in my skin
A presence slightly vexing
I didn't intend to let him in
But I found my body flexing

Madman in my skin
Like a fresh tide on sad, dry sand
Madman in my skin
Pink, purple heart mended in hand

Madman in my skin…
And he's falling through my pen.

Time

Frozen white and ice encrusted,
Hear the pain of friends mistrusted.
Slow and cold, a daily death;
The foggy white of my warm breath.

Is it moving? Can you hear?
A tiny sparkle, a diamond tear?
A graceful fall; an ugly crime.
This is called the passage of Time.

What It Evoked

Today was the day I found your crumpled little skeleton
hunched over the wheel
a host to the dust growing on the rubber
You looked like you were bracing rebirth
about to climb out of mother's womb
sneak through the dark of her walls
dance and recoil
but there you were, in the car instead
honking the silent horn after the midnight screw up
Now you're looking trapped in death forever
And though I both pity and envy you
I cannot help but feel that somehow
we are both the same.

Emotion

What is love?
Why must we fall into it?
People do stupid things when they are in love.
They buy gifts for no reason and feel lighter then air.
But then at the end of it all after all the gifts people change.
Some for the good,
Others for the bad.
When people turn bad it all breaks down.
When people turn good others call it denial.
So why do we fall in love?
Because we are human.
Made of only flesh and blood.

Spring

Spring is a new beginning
with much to do and to see.
New opportunities are waiting
to make our dreams flourish and bloom.

It's such a grand time to plan change,
to begin the new start we may need.
To try something bold and brazen,
to reach for the stars and succeed.

Spring is a new beginning,
a precious new chance sent to us.
We chase our dreams and capture them
with joy in our hearts each day.

2013-05-01 [Mortified Penguin]: *sobs bitterly*

2013-05-01 [Mortified Penguin]: There, now it's fixed and flawless.

2013-05-01 [Flisky]: Now you're just trying to annoy me.

2013-05-01 [Mortified Penguin]: Nuh uh, all those "Written by [Mortified Penguin]" lines were part of my updated poem. They were supposed to show an echo of the author, explaining who he was and that he too was flawed, and then it finished up with a "Written by anonymous" to signify that the author himself wasn't even the author and that there's a mysterious third party, which is an effect often used by Poe and Rembrandt in their poetry. The uQt'd <hr> at the end shows that the poem is complete, but still, following the motif of imperfection, flawed.

2013-05-01 [Flisky]: ...no. Just no.

2013-05-01 [Mortified Penguin]: And the rules also state, "The Daily Poem Bosses will not correct your submission for you." But you "corrected" my updated submission. That's cheating. D:

2013-05-01 [Flisky]: The Daily Poem bosses also reserve the right to remove poems from the page and ask people to stop commenting and posting. Please do not make me do that Mort.

2013-05-01 [Mortified Penguin]: Actually, the rules state that they can, "reserve the right to not feature poems based upon the quality of work," not based on personal vindiction and jealousy of an author's talent. And there's nothing about them being able to stop commenting and posting that's relevant and actually about the submissions and the rules. There's just a short request that chatter be kept off the page, so that the things I'm trying to discuss can be discussed. However, I will concede to you and leave it at that and not further edit my now mangled poem. I hope you are happy.

2013-05-01 [Mortified Penguin]: On that note, I would like to point out that I've submitted a new poem and would like to make sure it's acceptable. Is it acceptable?

2013-05-01 [Flisky]: There are things about not spamming the page. And yes, that's fine, if that's what you want to post.

2013-05-01 [Susie-Q]: your eloquent use of the English language is causing my diaphragm to erupt in uncontrollable spasm leaving me in tears on the floor. I believe the pigmies of Africa refer to thus phenomena as laughter. It's so painful yet beautiful. Bravo mort, you have used speech to send my abdominal muscles into convulsions. All praise "written by [Mortified Penguin]"

2013-05-01 [Mortified Penguin]: That is a good point. But, so this page isn't clogged with spam about how great my poetry is, please take it to Daily Poets' Choice. And feel free to nominate my poems to be on Mainstreet while you're there!

2013-05-02 [Susie-Q]: Too lazy. But someone definitely should. Yeah, definitely.

2013-05-06 [Flisky]: [pegasus1000]: please fix the format of your submission.

2013-05-10 [Susie-Q]: spacing from what I see. Though im running on two hours of sleep and a hangover so I could be mistaken

2013-05-10 [Chimes]: Because the bosses haven't replied yet: I do believe the error that was there has been fixed. It looks fine to me now. (There was a colon where there shouldn't've been.)

2013-05-10 [Flisky]: Oops. Sorry. This page was lost in my wiki comments section. Yes, the error was fixed.

2013-05-25 [kians mummy]: So have my poems gone to the queue?

2013-05-25 [wicked fae mage]: Yes, if the poems were here before, aren't now and:
-they weren't removed after a warning was given about a mistake
-you didn't take them down

2013-12-31 [wicked fae mage]: [dark starlight], please fix the format of your submission

2014-04-29 [Mortified Penguin]: I fixed it for her, since I owe her for introducing me to Elftown.

But we're totally even now. >:o
