Vicente was the first to stir. The last thing he remembered was the blonde he had killed two days ago mentioning something about Anubis. Vicente shook off the grogginess and dizziness as he stood up, trying to gauge his surroundings.
He saw that he was in a holding cell that allowed no squeezing room in any position. After a moment, Vicente cursed and looked down at the ground. “Anubis?” he asked. He stooped down beside the child who was covered in a thin blanket. He uncovered Anubis’ face and was relieved beyond anything else that his son was safe.
Anubis stirred, too. He heard his father’s voice and wanted it to be real. He fought to open his eyes and pushed himself to all fours blindly. “Father?” he called.
“Anubis!” Vicente gasped. He helped his son up and embraced him tightly. “I was so damn worried,” Vicente whispered.
“Me too,” Anubis agreed, embracing his father, slowly getting his sight back. “Where’s everybody else?” the groggy boy asked.
Vicente looked over his son’s shoulder and saw a small holding cell with two other figures in it. To his left Vicente saw a cell with Naoko and Mimi. “Everybody, if you can hear me, wake up,” Vicente called and heard his voice echo through the chamber.
Slowly, everybody else started to stir. “V-Vicente?” Naoko asked as she sat up and rubbed her eyes.
“Love, I’m in the cell across from you,” Vicente reached a desperate hand between the ensnaring bars, immediately dropping his reach, sliding his hand back into the cell.
Naoko stood up, holding herself up by the bars. “I’m glad Anubis is safe,” she whispered when she looked to the left of her husband. “And you…” she smiled weakly at Vicente.
“W-what’s going on?” Mimi was trying to rouse herself from the ground.
Naoko crouched down beside the girl, “Don’t panic, but we’re not in the best situation.”
Mimi sat against the wall, rubbing her eyes. “What do you mean? Where’s Anubis?”
“I’m here,” Anubis said, mirroring his father’s position against the bars. “It’s okay, we’ll figure a way out of this.”
“How do you plan on doing that?” Jaden asked as he stirred.
“Yeah, seriously,” Rakela agreed, rubbing the back of her head. “Gah! Are we all caught and trapped?” Taking a quick headcount, it became clear that Dixie was missing. “D-Dixie?”
“Don’t even ask if we’re alright I see,” Dante grumbled. Dante and Dameon were in the same cell.
“If you can’t die you’re obviously fine,” Claude said with a smirk.
“I see nothing dampens your spirits,” Bonnie said with a smile. She was holding Phoenix protectively at her side.
“Dixie’s missing?” Phoenix asked.
“She was with us,” Naoko muttered. “How did she get away?”
“Let’s hope she’s our lifeline and not speak of her. Those vampire hunters could come down at any second,” Anubis said wisely.
“Well, Vicente…” Jaden started, “How are you planning on getting us out of this?”
“Why me?” Vicente asked.
“I don’t know. I recall you always being a resourceful one,” Jaden shrugged.
For a long while, everybody sat in silence. Nobody was with their loves, sadly. They could only wish to be with one another, clearly a planned action. The silence was broken by a loud door opening.
A man who was clearly human entered their line of sight being careful to stay far away from the holding cells. “Well, well well,” Dane said with a grin, “One of you has the pendants and I’m here to find out who exactly that is.”
“You’re too late. None of us bear the gems,” Vicente interjected.
The robed man approached Vicente with caution, but allowed Vicente too close a proximity. “Oh, please. Do you believe that will work with me?”
Anubis sniffed the man and began snarling. This time a human man smelt good.
“Calm down, son,” he whispered. Vicente unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a bare neck with no pendant. “I hope you’re not too foolish to overlook the truth.”
Immediately after that remark Dane reached his hand into Vicente’s cell and gripped the vampire’s neck. Vicente snickered before grabbing Dane’s robes and yanking him into the metal cell with all of his strength. Vicente knelt down to Dane’s unconscious body and began patting around his robes. “What are you doing?” Anubis asked, finally controlling his bloodlust.
“Looking for the keys,” Vicente replied. Vicente stood up, punching the cell wall. “Damn it! Bloody hell!”
“Calm down, honey,” Naoko said soothingly.
Vicente blushed and closed his eyes, “God, give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference,” Vicente said before making the Catholic cross over his chest and opening his eyes.
“You don’t really think he gave up on us do you?” Naoko asked.
Vicente shook his head, “He answered all of my prayers eventually. I guess I’m one of the few that lived long enough to see it.”
“I never saw you as keeping religious values,” Rakela admitted.
“I never saw me having a wife, a son and another child on the way,” Vicente said as he leaned against the wall.
“I never saw me as being a prisoner,” Dameon said sardonically.
“None of us did,” Bonnie said sadly.
“One of them will have the key. I’ll just knock each one out until we find the right one,” Vicente suggested.
“Can you fly out?” Rakela asked Jaden. Jaden smiled and morphed into his smaller bat form. He slid out of the cell and changed back into his humanoid self. “I bet they didn’t anticipate bat Jaden,” Rakela said smugly.
Jaden blushed and took a step toward where he predicted the keys to their cells to be hung and was forced backward by a bolt of lightning. “What the…” he started to grumble but was hit by another bolt of lightning.
“Maybe I anticipated an escape,” Dimitri said as he entered the room. “Now, bat,” he smiled cruelly, “I suggest you lie there and don’t move unless I tell you to move. Understand?”
Jaden growled up at the vampire, “Bite me!”
Dimitri laughed, “You’re not my type. I prefer the pretty young ladies,” he said as he gazed over at Mimi who backed up against the wall.
“Don’t even think about it!” Anubis snapped.
“I’ve matched one set of soul mates so easily,” Dimitri smirked, knowing that Anubis would fall for his ploy. He approached the young boy and ripped Anubis’ shirt open.
Vicente clasped his hand around Dimitri’s wrist, “Don’t you ever lay a finger on my son again.”
“You think I respond to idle treats?” Dimitri asked.
“Do you think it’s just a threat?” Vicente snarled. Dimitri frowned because he knew that Vicente wasn’t just talking big. It was obvious from the bruises on the side of Dane’s face that real force had been used to knock him unconscious and the young boy who shared the cell with Vicente didn’t seem so prone to violence.
“None of us have the pendants you’re seeking so you have no reason to keep us here,” Naoko said boldly.
Dane turned around to face her and smiled. “What a beautiful young woman—or so you appear. A vampire fetish can go quite far, no?”
“My personal life is none of your business,” Naoko said flatly as she undid the top three buttons of her blouse, revealing no necklace.
“Such a bitable neck,” Dimitri licked his lips. Naoko was clearly beautiful and tempting, especially leaving so much to the imagination. “I’d love to just—”
“Touch my wife and I’ll kill you in the most torturous way I know,” Vicente snarled, his berserk rage surfacing again after almost a score of years it laid dormant.
Dimitri laughed, “I knew you’d tell me who you were paired with,” Dimitri turned to face Vicente again. Vicente’s fangs were bared and he was gripping the bars to his cell, trying to bite back his rage. “You’re not an ordinary vampire. You have so much strength that not even you are aware of…”
“I don’t need your analysis, don’t touch my wife and I’ll kill you quickly when I get out,” Vicente said quickly.
“So much to say and yet it’s nothing I want to hear,” Dimitri said as he shot a bolt of lightning at Vicente. Vicente was unmoved by the burn of the lightning. “Huh?”
“Vicente isn’t an ordinary vampire by any means,” Claude agreed. “Let’s just say he’s got a little bit of light behind him.”
“Light? You dare think of a vampire as good?” Dimitri turned his attention away from the numb and riled up Vicente.
“Well I surely don’t see myself as evil,” Claude replied flatly.
“And you’d be a damned fool to not see your true nature,” Dimitri glared daggers at Claude who was preparing a mental assault on the wicked vampire. “You seem to be concentrating very hard for not saying anything at all.”
“I’ve got a bit of a headache,” Claude replied, rubbing his temples.
Dimitri watched Claude slide the collar of his shirt down to reveal no pendant on him either. As Dimitri approached the cell with Bonnie he fell to the ground and began twitching, his body going ingot multiple spasms at once. “W-what’s happening?” he gasped.
“You’re going to let us out of these cells,” Naoko said darkly. “Understand?”
“Yes!” Dimitri screamed as tears streamed down his cheeks. The pain was unbearable. Something other than him was controlling his body and mind. He was being overpowered by something and he couldn’t explain what.
Edward and Ming stopped their meaningless pacing when they heard Dimitri scream. They ran down the stairs and instinctively knew what to do. Ming waved her hand and threw Claude against the wall, breaking his hold over Dimitri.
“Claude!” Bonnie reached her hand out, grasping toward him desperately.
“And your soul mate reveals herself,” Edward said darkly. He walked over to Bonnie and slid his hand from her neck to where the necklace would dangle from her chest. Claude snarled and threw one quick mental assault at Edward, bringing him to his knees.
“It would appear that our Mistress no longer wears the pendant,” Ming said in monotone. She was staring at Mimi’s neck where she had remembered seeing the necklace before.
The three conscious vampire hunters fled to the upper level of their home in befuddlement from Claude’s mental abilities.
