2006-12-13 [Lady of Lore]: Question: Dervish? As in a whirling dervish? Or is it something else...?
2006-12-15 [Dr.Mandarian]: A dervish is whirling yes. Right. It is a martial arts based profession who combines the art of combat with the arts of magic ( and is so categorized as 'semi-spell user' ) and uses channeling magic coming from the gods or the spiritual plane of godly energy. He or she focusses his power through the use of ritualized dances of power. A true fanatic, the Dervish's prime requisits are Intuition and Agility. His or her base spells deal with Fascination Dances, Travelling Dances, Teledance, Deadly Dances, Changing Dances and Communing Dances. ( Which specific effects I might inform you about later, if you are interested ) First level spells of the dervish are still already for example abled to calm targets with dances, 'hold' targets with dances, cast fascination and slumber on them, deliver a 'touch of pain' allows the caster to use Martial Arts in conjunction with the dance, making the martial art attacks a lot more impactful.
A dervish can magically be abled to gain a longer physical condition with lesser exhaustion ( Travelling Dances ), shrink to a halfth of his body mass or height without any decrease in strength, by a step or grow or face shift. Teledance is used to cast Vibrations, Pyrokinesis or might cause a number of objects to move very fast through the air. Communing Dances can gain visions of the action within the next minute or receive a dream, while dancing, relating to a topic, decided upon before retiring. The all mightiest spell of all is maybe 'Touch of Death' ( level 50 ) which might bring instant death to a target by one single touch, if he or she does not resist the spell.
( Or, also nice: Dance of High Communion - The caster instantly receives detailed informations from hid deity on a single topic )
If the dervish 'whirls', as you said, he even can teleport himself by miles ( and through time if he is high leveled once )
The only restriction th each spell is, that the dervish always has to make a DANCE PREPERATION, urgently!
If he doesn't do this first, before casting... Hmmm, he will meet pain. :P
2006-12-15 [Lady of Lore]: OOOOooooooh...
2007-01-30 [Lady of Lore]: Such endess possibilities here...^_^ Keep it up, this is awesome!
2007-01-30 [Dr.Mandarian]: Ah, what briliance within this modest and simple little hut!
Mee lady gives me the honour of visit again! ^_^
Ah, yes, right, a many many possibilities. Thanks, a lot! Eh, I wondered by the way, if you maybe even rather meant more the CULTURAL nature of these dervishes above?
Mh, you can in any case always ask things like that. I'll be glad to answer.
Actually, by tomorrow, my new illustrations for Madrumah will come in! Heh heh, and there will even be some other illustrations soon, made by much more gifted hands than mine, myself. Be excited!
Oh, but not to forget as well, I wanted to ask you for your opinion about the Madrumah concept.
I revised and changed it lately. And maybe you have got time somewhen, to read into it, and tell me what you think. If it is too much of a 'split' of genres and elements. If it is too much in one, or if you think that it feels plausible and homogenuous.
2007-02-01 [Lady of Lore]: I shall gladly read into it as time permits ^_^. I visit here quite frequently but nly say something when I have something worthwhile to say ^_^. I am excited to see the new illustrations ^_^ thats great that there are other hands joining in your endevor.
As for the Dervishes, I asked the question i did because the only dervish I had ever heard of was the sandstorms found in the "arabian" areas which were either storms or a genie type creature moving using a storm as both storm and creature were called dervishes, but alas, it is only in a mythological standpoint. ^^ It is entirely open to your own creation for which I do greatly like btw. ^^
2007-02-07 [Dr.Mandarian]: Cool mythical creatures, these 'dervishes' you described there. ( Never heard of that one's before ) No, THESE dervishes exist. And are even not my own invention. They once were strong believing and almost fanatic MONKS in old asia, who used to set themselves into ritual trance and religious ecstatis by 'dancing' in whole groups.
Their practise of that 'dances' were typical for them, and used as means to gather contact to god. Spinning very fast rightwards around their own body axis. Until they fell into that special mind state. You even could try that by yourself. If a human spins rightwards around his own axis ( by stretched out arms and holding the face into the same direction awhile ) you would quickly fall into a trance, TOO!
Spooky, ey? ^_^ Well, this society of monks were ALSO named 'Dervishes'. I have no idea, if this name is maybe etymological related to YOUR kind of 'dervishes' In my own world Madrumah / Mystradawn, the dervishes are still generally not exactly defined by culture and background. The only thing that is already clear, is, that they are using martial arts and magic, in combination.
2007-02-07 [Lady of Lore]: I see ^_^
