Hello all, and welcome to the Bird Photography Contest! I doubt there is much to explain about this - just find yourself a bird, be it a pet budgerigar or a penguin, point, and shoot. Not always quite as easy as that, so I'll be sure to give you a plenty of time.

2008-11-17 [Linderel]: Well, I'd like to see the whole bird, y'know. Or at least enough of it that we can see that indeed it is a bird of some sort. The feather image would be a nice entry for a macro photo contest. :)
2008-11-17 [moira hawthorne]: well why would the metal bird be included? ...its a sculpture not a bird... at least these two are birds...
2008-11-17 [Linderel]: Uagh. Clearly I shouldn't be answering any questions without having slept first. Can't think clearly.
Okay.
I'll allow the feather image if a picture showing the bird it came from can be posted alongside it. While the metal bird is a sculpture and not a living being, it still shows a significant portion of the bird and not just a detail of it. :P
2008-11-17 [moira hawthorne]: sleep is good... answer these once you have slept
so basically it has to be an photo of a bird... whether its a real bird or not... it has to represent a bird not elements of a bird... like feathers are only part of a bird... a face of a person is recognizable as that person... but their feet arent... so someone couldnt have webbed duck feet... by a head shot like 15.[xXPandaXx] Owly is ok...
just why is 2nd red owl image not acceptable?
2008-11-17 [Skydancer]: the red owl is not a photo, its a highly photoshoped image and this is a photography contest. shrugs pretty obvious.
2008-11-17 [Linderel]: Exactly.
2008-11-17 [Skydancer]: Actually I would have to see the bird from the feathers too. Its too simple to take a shot of say a hat with some feathers or a feathered detail on some item and that is not a bird either, there is no way to tell if its really a bird or not.
2008-11-17 [moira hawthorne]: well its just that its a PSfiltered photo.... its not a drawin...
and im just possin questions so that everyone knows the limitations...
2008-11-17 [Skydancer]: Nods which is good. Its sometimes hard to think about being really really clear in the rules in the beginning of a contest and someone always finds something outside what you might of considered. :D But that is the point, its Photoshopped. Its not a photo.
2008-11-17 [xXPandaXx]: it is a photo just the colors have been altered
2008-11-17 [Skydancer]: When a contest says photos, that normally means straight photos. Cropped maybe or minor adjustments same as you might do in a dark room, but photos. That owl is obviously not a "photo" its a photomanipulat
2008-11-17 [Tynuka-Rhytishy]: First of all, thank you for being so kind about answering my questions ^^ I had a feeling the owl wouldn't be accepted since it was put in photoshop. I just saw that the rules never stated anything about any photos tampered with would be disqualified. Thought I'd give it a shot and ask anyways ^^
But, if the feathers turn out to be a big problem, let me know. I have plenty of other entries I can enter ^^
2008-11-17 [Skydancer]: thats great, enter away and I think you will have better shots anyway. The idea behind a contest should be to stretch and do the very best you can. That and just have fun, never take it too seriously. :D
2008-11-17 [moira hawthorne]: specially since there isnt money involved1 lol... we are all just here to have fun
2008-11-17 [xXPandaXx]: But the feathers aren't on a hat or anything like that they are from an actual peacock that she has plenty of pictures of. It's my peacock lol i have a bunch. ^-^
2008-11-17 [Skydancer]: that is besides the point. Its not a bird, its just a few feathers, and this is a contest about bird photos. Not to be picky, nor to question your honesty, but anyone can say anything on the net. :) And its still not a bird. Just the feathers from a bird. :D
2008-11-17 [xXPandaXx]: but if its a bird photography contest the metal bird isn't a "bird" its a piece of metal shaped like one. would stuffed animals count? and these are all just questions. im not getting mad at anyone
2008-11-17 [Linderel]: Yes, I would accept a photo of a stuffed animal if someone would wish to submit one - as long as it showed that it's clearly a bird. The preference, of course, would still lie within real ones. :P
2008-11-17 [xXPandaXx]: so is the feather one allowed as long as there is a reference photo of the actual bird up?
2008-11-17 [Linderel]: I believe that is what I said earlier.
2008-11-17 [Skydancer]: Ultimately tis two things, one the decisions of the contest holder, and two, just how nifty the photo is, be it of a real bird, a stuffed bird, a plush bird. Its the quality and originality of the photo, not the actual bird that is going to get you noticed. :D
