I was not sure what to expect when I first heard of the modern day remake of Beauty and the Beast. It is my favorite Disney movie, and I did not want them to butcher it like they did Cinderella.
However, when I first watched this movie, I was pleasantly surprised. There was not over the top characters, no outlandish, completely different story line. Is was basic. Boy is vain jerk. Witch changes boy. Boy has a time limit to make girl fall in love. Time limit is almost reached. Girl admits love. Boy changes back. And I enjoyed every minute of it.
The acting at the beginning left me wondering, though. The character of Kyle, played by Alex Pettyfer, was slightly unbelievable at first. It is clear that Pettyfer may have had some trouble truly embracing the early character of Kyle. His 'classic jerk' left something to be desired. Although I did enjoy the recurring line that was introduced at the beginning: "Embrace the suck".
Mary-Kate Olsen and Vanessa Hudgens both also make appearances as the witch, Kendra, and the beauty, Lindy. Although Mary-Kate is not the first person who pops into my head as a witch, she plays the part well. Hudgens also does a great job with the 'underclass girl who wins the cute boy' role, something she does very well.
Overall, this is a great remake of a great movie. Not a replacement by any means, but a close second.
