Catlings are small, saucy and cheeky, sometimes even cocky and elegant but at the same time smart halflings. With their almost human-like exterior and their juvenile face features, they hardly differ from a human despite their speedy, wide awake and slightly cat-like eyes. And they are nevertheless much smaller than an adult humans, and between 80 cm and 1,20m tall, on the average. They possess little, unusually pointed – and almost bat-like ears, which nestle to the sides of their heads and stand back lightly, with some fine cillium attached to it, a maintained and delicate silvery cat’s whiskers and one - usually hardly really recognizable fine hare lip above its human, narrow lipped mouth ( partly not any more stamped out than a notch over the upper lip, like it is completely normal and natural also with humans, sometimes in cases like the hare’s lip of a cat’s snout )

Close to Wynhavens, in Bannelon, in connection with the upper half fair social class, then also a society of Catlings-Mark Counts, minne singers and bards, jokers and knight-like noblemen developed in imitation of the local elvish and half fairish court culture and the stand of knights. The Twickrascal‘s can all in all however as already said be divided in two large groupings: On the one hand those, who live on their islands in the sea upon little risings in the mud flats, which change by thr rythm of low tide and high tide, inbetween island form and hills in the mile-far open tideland, and those who live on the mainland in sea proximity, those who live in small villages in lovely pastureland between small wood groves and rustic culture among herds and farmers, or as wandering rogues, day labourers, vagabonds and gypsies, tinkerers and hawkers, craftsmen or luck flies roaming over the countryside; Those, which live in fields and meadows and forests, and those who work in large cities with maritime culture/ports, and in urban settlements of humans in careers as servant, page, craftsman, associate, messengers/run Carpenter, auxiliary cook, knife grinder, cooper, cauldron – or wheelmaker, miller, gold- and silver smiths, builders of instruments, glass blower, clockmaker and tailor. Further typical Twickrascal professions are those of the lighthouse keeper, wood-carver of figureheads, clock tower attendant, circus people, bards, rogues and vagabonds, animal tamers and beastmasters. Since they have large ability of empathy, by nature, they are partly able to deal with small animals, birds, cats, mice and intelligent other small animals particullary well. The smallest occupation kind among them are the courageous, dare-devilsih pure ADVENTURERS, who dream about heroic deeds and honour. Because Twickrascals abhor dishonesty, hiringness and raw violence, and are too respectable and modest, to strive for large material fame and wealth, and prefer it, to conquer and overcome their enemies and the "large people“ with cunning, joke, richness of tricks and skill, but all have a great unsatisfiable curiosity, longing after distance and the unknown, and discoverer desire in common. In their largest settlements outside of their mudflat islands and their own realm, in their village ‚Zwicklingen‘ in Espen and in Penceville in Princiat, and in the forest of Ambrell in Yadmelvan the Twickrascal’s have developed their completely own respective culture. In the forest of Ambrell they created and extended their own, underground means of transport of dug tunnels - the so-called "Quicktunnels“ with which they are able to cover great distances in roller coaster-like way in very short time, and can in this way easily come from one place to the other. Normal Twickrascal’s are long-lived, and exceed in the resistance against poisons and diseases even the dwarves. So that they partly reach an age of between 100 to 200 years. By their naturally innate night vision and outstanding perception strength in total darkness - which exceeds the night vision of elves, orcs and dwarves and Kobolds by far and is otherwise only reached by pure underground - and night creatures as by Gnolls and gnomes - they were suited for this task. Although the Catlings actually represent an underground race in no way.
Nobody except few old persons among them still know from where their species actually comes, and which origin it sprung from. But - although all Catlings are rather night active, they are a race of the upper world. Equipped with sharpest, most alert and fine instincts and senses. Dextrous, extremely flexible, agilely and resistant to poisons and diseases.
Their nature is the one of a trickster, and also the one of a eloquent speaker of pun, flattering speech, disarming charm and striking rhetorics. Their high, over-averaged intelligence and their cleverness pairs itself up thereby with their almost completely unreligious convicition. Since their own culture since long adapted to the locally prevailing environment over the time of the co-existence with the human civilisation ( and it‘s values, moral and religions ), they are neither reglemented by special feeling for dishonesty nor high virtue in their deeds and acts. Among their-same, in their own culture‘s small niches and at places where they meet, they are extremely informal, socially and helpfully. That is their highest law in this part of their culture. To mutually support and help themselves, among each other, and to carry, nourish, teach and promote the weaker ones and older ones, exactly as also the most youngest of all the other Catlings
And who then later established themselves there and settled down. In order to then in the future grow together with the world there and to come to limited / modest reputation, acceptance and even appreciation.

They generally do not hate humans in no way - despite everything that some humans did to their ancestors once and despite that many Catlings died hard in their exploitative mine work, once – But they however love it nevertheless to play tricks to descendants of the human race with malicious intelligence and elegance, in order to give them a little lection where they can.
May it be that they fool a human taking him for a ride, may it be that they even challenge individual humans even in a discipline, in which they and their species are farly superior.
The Catlings of the cities have certainly nevertheless to owe a lot to the humans:
The advantages, the luxury and the possibilities of the civilization and the - hard fought for, but then nevertheless well-respected position of their own kind in the city, the possibility to unite among themselves to only one large – and growing – racial community, and then in addition also the basis for the increase of profit, prosperity and wealth.
Whereby they acquired the sympathy of ever more and more human city citizens – and particularly among their thief circles.
And these are also the things, for which a Catling usually strives: Profit, prosperity and wealth, and influence in the human world. Not only in order to enrich oneself, but also to enrich the entire community of the Catlings in the whole. Some falsify books, possession documents, certificates and documents of most diverse other kind ( from the wrong official doctor or witch master title to the family tree, which proves a person as aristocrat, knight or candidate on certain landed property )
Others then again are gamblers and artists in fraudulent or magical / illusionistic slight hand maneuvering ( some few are also magically abled spy, assassin or vocational murderers )
Since they carry a still even stronger sense for animals, forest and wilderness in themselves than their urban or village brothers and cousins, as for example also more knowledge of animal languages and moreover are well-versed and familiar to the forest and meadows, some of them are brilliant rangers, track readers, trappers and scouts.
While the urban Catlings know well how to live in co-existence with humans – and to exist at least at the edge of the human society by comfortable conditions and quality of life, more savage Catlings and individual other Catlings are unable by nature to understand the human character and its consequences.

Their godly deeds rather ressemble heroic acts and large wellfare‘s for the own people and their conception of acquiring divinity rather ressembles trying to reach perfection in their natural determined gifts and abilities – as for example in their occupation - and in fame and wealth ( as a saying of the Catlings says: Man, Cat or mouse, only use your nous! )
Their conception of "sin“ rather turns out in the form of cowardly betrayal of own people, unfaithfulness against their own kinship and species, and insidious playing off other Catlings against others – and / or against humans or elves. And still there is a large treasure of hero stories, traditional songs and legends of own culture existant among Catlings, which is gladly, told, togetherly sung, listend to and dreamt about.
And therein every now and then also stories and songs of first Gods, heroes and creators appear.
Godly magicians, who once chose them as creatures in order to maintain and secure their own knowledge and the onlasting of their kind and culture, in form of the new own young race of halflings. Magicians, who mostly had got to do wih the moon and the one-eyed moon God. While some songs also told about a mystical, paradisiac place named "Paarbèll“ located at the moon, and its earth-off turned side, where the deceased souls or spirits of the Catlings jump up once, when they separate from the terrestrial life - and mix there among spirits of animalic cats, lucky ones and ancestors and deceased forefathers. As children of "Hourin“ and in his eternal, released shelter.
Because the most Catlings - apart from recorded legends, songs and myths – however forgot the oldest religiously timbered theories in the real everydays life and lost a lot of faith in them, they oftenly look for their own identity as a race rather in their personal existence, and philosophize and poetize sometimes gladly in the night, at the fire, or also under the moon, are otherwise however pure pragmatics – and prefer to look up to real, seizable role-models and examples, like to the master of the Catlings in Oslabad, or other Catlings, who ‚made it‘ by all own strength. Or worked up from way down low by themselve, with much diligence and perseverance and then in the end came to self-acquired status, good getting along, fame, wealth or reputation.TWICKRASCALS ADDENDUM:

At the same time one of the main Gods besides this Zwikkel is the rogue god ‚Mikkel', the God for luck, charm and protection, God of the houses, master of the poltergeister and goblins at the countryside, household God and protector of the chambers and rooms ( who should allegedly be similar to the little people / household fairies himself )... And form the Twickrascal culture of island and mud and sand flat inhabitants, with lightly nordic, shamanic colored culture, prevailing there, which live there as so-called "Ocean Herds“, beach robber, shell- and plankton collecters and hunters of seals, sea-animals and sea mammals.
They worship the birds as figures of the sky as heralds of mystical oracles, the creatures of the sea and sea-spirits, like the sea God Moekkel, and the sea-goddess Nyks, regard sea mammals as divine intermediaries between air and sea and also pray to some old ship wrecks, buildings, statues and ruins, in nomadship over the mud flats, which are partly only given free by low tide by the sea.
For this reason a Twickrascal can tend to act very lively mercurial and unfocussed. On the other hand they possess a high ability to pick up things fastly and at the same time with long memory ability, to learn and acquire skills with large enthusiasm, also by concentrating on single areas of activities, vocational fields and abilities and to completely get down to these areas.
Twickrascal‘s are surrounded by an aura, which penetrates their optimistic, partly nearly naive impartiality and innocence.
In the nearly city-large Penceville then, most different Twickrascals of most diverse professions gather in stop-overs on their journeys, for busy and vivid exchange of stories and pieces of news, for celebrating and song, play and make music, among native Twickrascals, guests and visitors of other races.
They own the successorship of next tribe shamen, to them certain Twickrascal’s some with concerns, needs and questions or ask for healing, and also represent the instances of the highest spiritual advisor, oracle, ritual councellor, and holy man/holy woman.
